St. George Property Tax Records
St. George property tax records are managed through East Baton Rouge Parish since the city only recently incorporated in 2024. The parish assessor's office in Baton Rouge handles all tax assessments, and property owners in St. George use the same search tools and payment portals that serve the rest of East Baton Rouge Parish. You can search these records online at no cost through several parish portals that cover all properties within the St. George city limits.
St. George Quick Facts
St. George Tax Assessment Office
St. George does not yet have its own tax assessor. All property tax records for St. George are handled by the East Baton Rouge Parish Assessor's Office. Brian Wilson serves as the parish assessor, and his staff values every parcel in the parish, including all land and homes within St. George. The main office is in downtown Baton Rouge at 222 St. Louis Street, on the ground floor of City Hall. Two branch locations make it easier to get help in person. The Coursey branch at 10500 Coursey Blvd. is closer to many St. George residents. There is also a Central branch at 14790 Wax Road.
The assessor's office covers real estate, business personal property, and oil and gas equipment. Each parcel gets a fair market value based on La. R.S. 47:2321, which defines that as the price a willing buyer and seller would agree to under normal conditions. For homes and land in St. George, the assessed value is 10% of fair market value per the Louisiana Constitution, Article VII, Section 18.

St. George Property Tax Structure
St. George incorporated as a city in 2024, making it one of the newest cities in Louisiana. The tax structure is still being set up. Right now, property owners in St. George pay taxes through the East Baton Rouge Parish system. The parish sheriff's office acts as the tax collector for the entire parish under Louisiana law. Tax bills go out in late November each year, and all taxes are due by December 31.
As the city government takes shape, St. George may eventually set its own millage rates for city services. That has not happened yet. For now, St. George residents pay the same parish and school district taxes as other parts of East Baton Rouge. The homestead exemption still applies to the parish portion of your tax bill. Under La. R.S. 47:1703, owner-occupied homes get a $7,500 reduction in assessed value. That is equal to about $75,000 of market value. But keep in mind that the homestead exemption does not apply to taxes levied by cities, towns, or villages. If St. George adds its own city millage in the future, the exemption would likely not cover that portion.
Seniors age 65 and older may also lock in their assessed value through the special assessment level freeze under La. R.S. 47:1703.1. Income limits apply and the amount changes each year.
Paying St. George Property Taxes
The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office collects all property taxes in the parish, including for St. George. You can reach the tax division at (225) 389-4810. Tax notices are mailed the last week of November. Payments are due by December 31 of the assessment year. If you miss that date, interest starts at 1% per month under Louisiana law. After enough time passes with no payment, the property can be sold at a tax sale.
You can pay taxes online, by mail, or in person at the sheriff's office. The postmark on mailed payments is accepted as the payment date, except during the two weeks before a tax sale. If you do not get a tax notice in the mail, that does not excuse you from paying. Call the sheriff's tax office or visit ebrso.org to check your bill.
Tax Assessment Appeals in St. George
If you think your St. George property is assessed too high, you can challenge it. Under La. R.S. 47:1992, the parish Board of Review hears disputes during a 15-day window after assessment rolls open for public inspection. Start by talking to the assessor's office. Bring documents that support your claim, like recent sales of similar homes or an independent appraisal. Many issues get resolved at this stage without a formal appeal.
If the Board of Review does not side with you, the next step is the Louisiana Tax Commission. You have 10 business days after the Board's written decision to file your appeal. After that, you can seek judicial review within 30 days if you still disagree. Under La. R.S. 47:2331, all property in Louisiana is reappraised at least every four years. The Louisiana Tax Commission sets the exact schedule, so values can shift at each reassessment cycle. That is often when property owners first notice a jump in their assessed value and decide to appeal.
St. George Property Deed Records
Deed records and conveyance documents for St. George are filed at the East Baton Rouge Parish Clerk of Court. These records show property transfers, mortgages, and liens. They tie into the assessor's data and help verify ownership when you look up tax records. You can search some deed records through the clerk's online system.
The Louisiana Tax Commission also plays a role in property tax records statewide. The commission reviews and certifies the assessment rolls for every parish, including East Baton Rouge. It acts as an appellate body for tax disputes and publishes ratio studies that measure how well parish assessments match actual market values. These reports are public and can be found on the commission's website.
Note: Historical property tax adjudication records from 1880 to 1973 are available through the State Land Office document system at no cost.
