Assumption Parish Assessor's Office
The Assumption Parish Assessor's Office is in charge of discovering, listing, and valuing all property in the parish for ad valorem tax purposes. This covers land, buildings, business equipment, and oil and gas property. The assessor follows the Louisiana Constitution and revised statutes when setting property values. Each parcel in Assumption Parish has a record that shows the owner, the assessed value, and the legal description. You can reach the assessor's office in Napoleonville during normal business hours.
Fair market value drives every assessment in Assumption Parish. La. R.S. 47:2321 defines fair market value as the price that a willing and informed buyer and a willing and informed seller would agree on under normal conditions. Land and homes are assessed at 10% of that value. Commercial property is assessed at 15%. These rates are set by the Louisiana Constitution under Article VII, Section 18 and apply to all 64 parishes.

The Police Jury acts as the collection agent for property taxes in Assumption Parish, which is different from many other parishes where the sheriff handles tax collection.
Searching Assumption Parish Tax Records
Assumption Parish uses the Schneider Corp Beacon GIS system for property searches. You can look up parcels by owner name, address, or parcel number. The system shows parcel outlines on an interactive map with aerial photos. It also displays property details like lot size, land use, and assessed value. This tool is free to use from any computer with internet access.
For information about deed records and other court filings, the Assumption Parish Clerk of Court keeps those files. Conveyance records, mortgages, and civil records are recorded there. If you need a document that shows a transfer of ownership, that is where you go. The clerk's office is also in Napoleonville.
Paying Assumption Parish Property Taxes
Property taxes in Assumption Parish are levied on November 15 each year. They are due by December 31. The Assumption Parish Police Jury acts as the tax collection agent, which is not the usual setup in Louisiana. Most parishes use the sheriff's office for that job. After January 1, unpaid taxes begin to accrue interest. Under La. R.S. 47:1951, all real property in Louisiana is subject to taxation unless the constitution provides a specific exemption. January 1 is the assessment date each year.
You can pay your Assumption Parish property taxes online through the TCM Online portal. The system allows you to search by notice number, parcel number, taxpayer name, or address. Tax records on this system go back to 2019. The portal is shown below.
This payment system lets you look up your bill and pay it with a few clicks. You can also view past tax years to check payment history.
Note: Assumption Parish uses the Police Jury as its tax collection agent rather than the sheriff's office, which is less common in Louisiana.
Assumption Parish Tax Assessments and Appeals
All property in Assumption Parish must be reappraised at least once every four years under La. R.S. 47:2331. The Louisiana Tax Commission sets the exact schedule for each parish's reassessment cycle. During the reassessment year, all values are updated to reflect current market conditions. If market values have gone up, your assessment will likely go up too. If they have dropped, you may see a reduction.
The homestead exemption is available to owner-occupied homes in Assumption Parish. Under La. R.S. 47:1703, eligible homeowners get a $7,500 reduction in assessed value. That works out to about $75,000 off the market value of the home. You need to apply at the assessor's office. Seniors 65 and older may also qualify for a special assessment level freeze under La. R.S. 47:1703.1 that keeps the assessed value from going up as long as income stays below a certain limit.
If you disagree with your assessment, La. R.S. 47:1992 provides a process to challenge it. You have a 15-day window to file an appeal with the parish Board of Review after the assessment rolls open for public inspection. If the Board does not rule in your favor, you can appeal to the Louisiana Tax Commission within 10 business days. After that, you can go to court within 30 days of the Commission's decision. Start by talking with the assessor's office to see if the issue can be resolved informally.
Assumption Parish Tax Rates
The Assumption Parish tax rate has been around $3.50 per $1,000 of assessed valuation. Different taxing bodies within the parish set their own millage rates. These include the school board, police jury, sheriff, and various special districts for fire, water, and recreation. Each district may have its own millage, so two properties in different parts of Assumption Parish can have very different total tax bills even if they have the same assessed value.
Louisiana does not collect state property taxes. All property taxes are local. The assessor determines the value, the taxing bodies set the millage, and the collection agent sends out the bills and collects the payments. This three-part system applies to every parish in the state.
